Verified by the Energy Saving Trust
We are very proud that the ProPERLA wall coatings that we use have been verified by the Energy Saving Trust following their rigorous and independent review process.
Evidence including independent laboratory tests (discussed below), European Certifications and our manufacturing and quality control procedures were reviewed and it was concluded that application of ProPERLA wall coatings do lead to improvements in thermal efficiency.
Lucideon's world-leading testing and characterization laboratories enabled them to scientifically and impartially test ProPERLA wall coatings to ensure they are fit for purpose and conform to regulations.
Specifically, the tests were conducted to;
- determine performance after 25 years of accelerated weathering
- test and analyse thermal insulating properties
- test and analyse breathability
- test and analyse the super hydrophobic (highly water repellent) properties of the coatings
Lucideon constructed a single skin brick wall which was evenly split vertically into thirds with a 10 mm x 100 mm insulated expansion joint inserted to prevent heat transfer between each section.
One third of the wall was coated using ProPERLA Masonry Crème, the middle third was left untreated to act as a control and the final third was coated with ProPERLA Primer followed by ProPERLA Facade Coating.
A total of 9 thermocouples were positioned on each section of the wall to monitor the temperature; 3 were positioned on the front of the wall, 3 were positioned at the rear of the wall and 3 were placed at a depth of 50 mm within the body of the wall. Thermal imaging was also used.
25 Year Performance
To determine the long term performance of ProPERLA wall coatings, the test wall frame was subjected to accelerated weathering correlating to 25 years exposure.
Placed within a hygrothermal chamber, the test wall panel was subjected to repeated heat-rain cycles followed by heat-cold cycles at controlled humidity to simulate naturally occurring conditions.
On completion of the weathering test, the bricks coated with ProPERLA showed no deterioration either in performance or aesthetic appearance. There was no evidence of cracking, delamination or irreversible deformation. The coated bricks also showed no evidence of water penetration.
The uncoated bricks (the middle third) showed evidence of water penetration and significant soluble salt deposits/salt effloresence (see image).

ETAG 034:2012 – 25 year hygrothermal performance
The thermal performance benefits of ProPERLA wall coatings were scientifically assessed.
Temperature readings were taken before, during and after the accelerated weathering test, using the 9 thermocouples across the test wall frame. Thermal images were also taken.
Bricks coated with ProPERLA were more energy efficient than uncoated ones.
Thermocouples placed on the rear face of the walls showed that during the hygrothermal rain cycle, the uncoated wall showed, on average, an increase of 6⁰C of heat loss in comparison to the coated walls.
Thermal images taken of the rear of the wall during the rain cycles clearly show the temperature differential between coated and uncoated bricks (see image).
There was no change in thermal insulating properties of the coated bricks after completion of the accelerated weathering test demonstrating long term performance.

ETAG 004;2011 – External thermal insulation composite
Testing was conducted to determine the effect ProPERLA wall coatings have on the ability of the bricks to allow moisture to escape.
15 specimens (5 coated in ProPERLA Masonry Crème, 5 coated in ProPERLA Facade Coating and 5 uncoated) along with a further 15 specimens of each coating type cut from the test wall panel after it was subjected to accelerated weathering, were submitted for the determination of water vapour resistance using the wet-cup method.
The samples were then stored in an environmental chamber controlled at 23⁰C ± 2⁰C and 50% ± 5% relative humidity and weighed at specific time intervals.
Neither ProPERLA Masonry Crème nor ProPERLA Facade Coating adversely effected the water vapour resistance of the brick substrate.
The uncoated wall had a mean SD value of 0.57, the same brick substrate when coated with ProPERLA Masonry Crème and ProPERLA Facade Coating gave SD values of 0.56 and 0.60 respectively, showing they had little effect on the breathability of the brick substrate.

Highly Water Repellent
The super hydrophobic (highly water repellent) properties of the coatings were put to the test.
The test specimens used to analyse and measure breathability were also used for moisture content testing using Lucideon's In House Testing Method PR 27:1998.
Each specimen was sealed on 4 sides, leaving the front face exposed. Specimens were weighed before being placed in water, front face submerged. Specimens were then remeasured.
All samples were then placed in a dryer and weighed once more.
The moisture content was then calculated.
The bricks coated with ProPERLA were able to repel water and reduce absorption.
Moisture content tests revealed that the uncoated bricks showed an increase in moisture by 11.12%, whereas the bricks coated in ProPERLA Masonry Crème only showed an increase of 0.41% and 0.74% for PropERLA Facade Coating.
This equates to reduced water absorption of 96.3%. for ProPERLA Masonry Crème and 93.4% for ProPERLA Facade Coating.
